Delf a2 exam preparation, taught section by section
DELF is a diploma rather than a test — you pass it once and hold it for life. A2 is the level most learners take as their first formal French qualification.
- France Éducation international
- CEFR A2
Who this is for
Is this the right course for you?
Learners with roughly a year of French who want a permanent certificate, and school or university students whose programme requires a documented level.
What you cover
Inside the DELF A2 course
- The four sections: compréhension orale, écrite, production écrite and orale
- Passé composé and imparfait, and which one French actually uses when
- Everyday vocabulary — travel, food, work, health, daily routine
- Written production to the A2 task types and marking grid
- The oral, rehearsed with unprepared follow-up questions
- Two full timed mock papers with written feedback
DELF A2 is the first DELF most adults take, and its appeal is permanence: a diploma from the French Ministry of Education that never expires.
The section minimum matters
A pass needs 50 overall and at least 5 in each section. Candidates who are strong on paper and weak in listening regularly fail on the second condition, so preparation is deliberately weighted towards whichever skill the diagnostic finds weakest.
Listening first
French spoken at natural speed elides sounds the written language preserves. Learners who study from text and postpone audio meet a wall at exactly this level, so listening starts in week one.
DELF A2 questions, answered properly
Does DELF expire?
No. DELF and DALF are diplomas issued by the French Ministry of Education and they are valid for life. That is the main practical difference from TEF and TCF, which are tests that return a score and typically expire after two years. If you need permanent proof of level, DELF is the one to take.
What is the pass mark for DELF A2?
You need 50 out of 100 overall, with a minimum of 5 out of 25 in each of the four sections. That means a very weak section can sink an otherwise comfortable pass, which is why preparation should be weighted towards your weakest skill rather than spread evenly.
How long does it take to prepare for DELF A2?
From A1, three to five months at two lessons a week with homework. From zero, eight to twelve months. French is one of the faster languages for English speakers, and the main obstacle at A2 is usually listening, where written familiarity gives learners a false sense of their level.
