How we work

From first message to first lesson

  1. Tell us what the lesson is for

An exam with a date, a move, a job, a text you want to read. The reason changes the plan more than the language does.

  2. We match you with a tutor

Right language, right variety, right specialism, and a timezone that works for you rather than one you have to get up at 5am for.

  3. Take a free 30-minute trial

A real lesson, not a sales call. The tutor works out where you actually are, which is usually not where a self-assessment puts you.

  4. Book lessons that suit your week

Move or cancel up to 12 hours before without losing the lesson. No subscription and no minimum term.

The practical details

The things people ask after they have decided

What you need

A laptop or tablet, a headset, and a broadband connection that holds a video call. A phone works but makes shared documents hard to read.

How lessons are delivered

Video call with a shared document your tutor writes in as you go. You keep the document, so you have a record of every correction.

Lesson length

60 minutes for adults, 30 for children under about eleven. Two shorter lessons a week beat one long one for almost everyone.

Rescheduling

Move or cancel up to 12 hours before the lesson without losing it. Later than that and the lesson is used, because your tutor has held the time.

Homework

Expect 30 to 60 minutes between lessons. Progress tracks homework more closely than it tracks lesson count, which is not what most people want to hear.

Timezones

Tutors are in several countries. Tell us the hours that genuinely work in your week and we match availability to that rather than to whoever is free first.

If your week is already full

A language tutor for busy professionals

Most of our students are working full time. The pattern that survives contact with a real job is two fixed slots a week, booked at the same times, with homework that fits in a commute. Ambitious schedules collapse in about a month; boring ones last years. If your availability changes week to week, say so — some tutors can work that way and some cannot, and it is better to know before you start.

Lessons in the evening or before work exist for most languages, because tutors are in several countries. Tell us the hours that genuinely work rather than the hours you would like to work, and we will match you against those.

Questions about how it runs

How do online language lessons work in practice?

You join a video call at the agreed time and your tutor shares a document that both of you can write in. They speak the target language as much as your level allows, correct you as you go, and write new vocabulary and corrections into the document as it happens. At the end you keep the document, which becomes your record and your homework brief.

Is one-to-one better than a group class?

For most adults with a specific goal, yes — you speak for the whole hour instead of two minutes, and the lesson adapts to your gaps rather than the group average. Group classes are cheaper and some people find the shared momentum motivating. If a free municipal class is working for you, keep it and use one-to-one lessons to accelerate rather than replace it.

How often should I have lessons?

Twice a week is the sweet spot for most learners with a deadline. Once a week works if you do the homework and use the language in between. Three or more only helps if you have the time to consolidate between lessons — otherwise you are paying to be taught things you have not had time to absorb yet.

Can I take lessons in the evening or early morning?

Usually. Tutors are spread across several countries, which means most languages have some coverage outside standard European working hours. It is easier for some languages than others, so tell us your available windows before we match you rather than after — it is one of the most common reasons a match does not work out.

What if I need to pause for a few weeks?

Tell your tutor and pause. There is no subscription and no minimum term, so stopping for exams, a work crunch or a holiday costs nothing. We will hold your regular slot for a few weeks where we can, and tell you honestly if we cannot rather than leaving you to find out.
