A tisus preparation course for entry to a Swedish university

TISUS is not a general language test. It asks whether you can read academic Swedish, argue in writing, and hold your own in a seminar — and it is marked accordingly.

TISUS is the entrance test for degree programmes taught in Swedish, and it measures academic capability through the medium of Swedish rather than Swedish for its own sake.

Three parts, unevenly weighted in difficulty

Reading comprehension, written production and oral proficiency. In practice, written production is where most candidates lose the paper — not because their Swedish is weak but because building a referenced argument under time pressure is a skill in its own right.

Preparation is academic coaching as much as language teaching

Expect to be taught essay structure, source handling and argument as well as Swedish. That is what the exam is testing, and treating it purely as a vocabulary problem is why capable speakers sometimes fail it.

TISUS questions, answered properly

What is TISUS and who needs it?

TISUS, Test i svenska för universitets- och högskolestudier, is the Swedish proficiency test for university admission, administered by Stockholm University. If you are applying to a Swedish-taught degree programme and do not have Swedish upper secondary qualifications, this is normally the test you need. Confirm with the institution, as some accept alternatives.

What level is TISUS?

Roughly C1 on the CEFR — advanced. It expects you to read several pages of unfamiliar academic prose, write a structured argument referencing it, and speak in a discussion where you are challenged. Candidates who have passed Swedex B2 are usually still some months of work away from a comfortable TISUS pass.

How long does TISUS preparation take?

From a solid B2, four to eight months of focused study. The gap is largely reading speed, academic vocabulary and written structure rather than grammar. Candidates who read Swedish non-fiction and quality journalism regularly between lessons close it considerably faster than those who rely only on lesson material.
