SFI is the backbone of Swedish language provision for new residents, and it works. It is also, inevitably, a classroom system: fixed timetables, mixed levels, and limited individual speaking time. Private lessons alongside it solve the parts a group cannot.
Where the two fit together
SFI supplies structure, grammar coverage and a free entitlement. One-to-one lessons supply speaking time, correction, and pace matched to you rather than to the group. Most of our SFI students use us for the second while keeping the first.
The national tests
SFI courses C and D end in national tests with a defined format. Like any exam, they reward familiarity with the format as much as language ability, and that is quick to build once someone shows you the shape of the paper.

What is SFI and am I eligible?
SFI, Svenska för invandrare, is free Swedish tuition provided by Swedish municipalities to most adult residents with a personnummer. Eligibility depends on residence status and municipality, so check with your kommun. If you are eligible, take it — it is a genuinely good deal, and private lessons work best alongside it rather than instead of it.
Why pay for lessons if SFI is free?
Speed and speaking time. SFI classes are large and mixed-level, so a fast learner waits and a struggling one is carried along. In a group of twenty you may speak for two minutes an hour. If you have a deadline — a job, a course, a residency application — one-to-one lessons alongside SFI usually halve the time to the level you need.
Do I need Swedish for permanent residency?
Requirements have been under revision, so confirm the current position with Migrationsverket rather than any school's summary. Proposals to introduce language and civics requirements for permanent residence and citizenship have been in progress for some time. If a test is introduced it is expected around A2 to B1, which this course targets.
