Bergenstest preparation course online, at the level universities require

The Bergenstest sits above Norskprøve, at roughly C1, and it is what Norwegian universities and several professional bodies ask for. It is an academic exam and needs academic preparation.

  • Norsk språktest
  • CEFR C1

Who this is for

Is this the right course for you?

Applicants to Norwegian universities, professionals seeking authorisation that requires higher Norwegian, and candidates who have passed Norskprøve B1–B2 and need the next certificate.

What you cover

Inside the Bergenstest course

  • The full exam structure, written and oral, and how each section is weighted
  • Reading dense source material at speed and summarising it accurately
  • Written production: structured argument, referencing the source texts
  • Listening to lectures and interviews at unmodified speed
  • The oral examination, including presenting and defending a position
  • Timed mock papers with detailed written feedback

The Bergenstest is the higher-level Norwegian proficiency exam, and it is closer to an academic skills test than to a language test. Candidates who arrive expecting more of what Norskprøve asked for are usually surprised.

What the exam is really measuring

Whether you can function in Norwegian at a university. That means reading several pages of unfamiliar prose quickly, extracting an argument, writing about it in structured Norwegian, and defending a position out loud. Vocabulary breadth matters, but reading speed and written structure decide more results.

Reading between lessons

More than any other course we run, Bergenstest preparation depends on what happens outside the lesson. Candidates who read Norwegian newspapers, essays and non-fiction consistently arrive at the exam ready. Candidates who only do the homework generally do not.

Bergenstest questions, answered properly

What is the difference between the Bergenstest and Norskprøve?

Norskprøve is the state test used for residency and citizenship and tops out around B2. The Bergenstest, formally Test i norsk – høyere nivå, sits above it at roughly C1 and is aimed at academic and professional use. They are different exams with different formats; preparing for one does not prepare you for the other.

Who actually requires the Bergenstest?

Norwegian universities generally require it, or an equivalent, for degree programmes taught in Norwegian. Some professional authorisation routes accept it as evidence of higher proficiency. Check the exact requirement with the institution, because several now accept Norskprøve B2 as an alternative and the picture has been changing.

How long does Bergenstest preparation take?

From a solid B2, most candidates need four to eight months of focused work. The gap is less about grammar than about reading speed, academic vocabulary and the ability to build a written argument under time pressure. Candidates who read Norwegian non-fiction regularly between lessons progress noticeably faster.
