German a1 for spouse visa applicants, taught as a short focused course

This is a narrow, well-defined requirement with a defined exam behind it. Treated as its own project rather than as general German, it is usually eight to twelve weeks.

  • Goethe-Institut
  • CEFR A1

Who this is for

Is this the right course for you?

Applicants for a family reunion or spouse visa to Germany who need a documented A1, and their partners trying to work out what the requirement actually asks for.

What you cover

What the lessons cover

  • Exactly what the A1 exam contains, module by module
  • Present tense, articles and enough grammar for the exam, no more
  • The vocabulary the A1 syllabus actually tests
  • The short written message, drilled to an adaptable template
  • Speaking, rehearsed with unprepared follow-up questions
  • Two full timed mock papers with written feedback

The A1 spouse-visa requirement is one of the few language goals with a genuinely fixed target: a specific exam at a specific level, and nothing beyond it required.

Why that is good news

Because it can be planned. A course aimed only at the A1 syllabus, run twice a week with homework, gets most adults to exam readiness in eight to twelve weeks. Enrolling in a general German course instead usually takes three times as long to reach the same certificate.

What we will not do

We will not advise you on whether you qualify for an exemption or on how your application will be assessed. That is a matter for the German mission or an immigration adviser, and getting it wrong has consequences a language school should not be responsible for.

German A1 for a Spouse Visa questions, answered properly

Which certificate do German missions accept for a spouse visa?

Goethe-Institut A1 is the most commonly accepted, and several missions also accept telc or ÖSD at A1. The decision rests with the German mission handling your application, and practice varies by country. Get the requirement in writing from them before booking a sitting, and send it to us so we prepare you for the right paper.

Are there exemptions from the A1 requirement?

There are recognised exemptions, including for certain nationalities, for spouses of EU Blue Card holders and some skilled workers, for applicants with a recognised degree, and on grounds of illness or disability. This is legal territory rather than language teaching, so take advice from the mission or an immigration lawyer — do not rely on a language school.

How quickly can I be ready for the exam?

Eight to twelve weeks at two lessons a week is realistic for most adults starting from zero, assuming homework between lessons. It is faster than general German because the target is narrow and known. The listening module is the usual sticking point and gets a disproportionate share of lesson time.
