Goethe a1 exam preparation, module by module, with a certified tutor
A1 is a narrow, well-defined exam, which makes it one of the few language goals you can plan precisely. Most candidates need eight to twelve focused weeks, not a year.

What you cover
Inside the Goethe-Zertifikat A1 course
- The four modules: Hören, Lesen, Schreiben, Sprechen
- Present tense, articles, and the case system in its simplest form
- Everyday vocabulary — introductions, shopping, time, travel, family
- The short written message the exam asks for, drilled to a template you can adapt
- Speaking, rehearsed with unprepared follow-up questions
- Two full timed mock papers with written feedback
The Goethe-Zertifikat A1, also called Start Deutsch 1, is the first rung of the Goethe ladder and the one most often taken for a specific bureaucratic reason rather than out of general interest.
Why a narrow exam is good news
A1 tests a defined vocabulary and a limited grammar range. That means preparation can be genuinely targeted, and a competent adult with a deadline can plan backwards from the exam date with some confidence. Very few language goals allow that.
Where the lessons put the effort
Listening and speaking, disproportionately. Reading and writing at A1 are manageable for most learners with homework alone; the two live skills are where lesson time earns its keep.
Goethe-Zertifikat A1 questions, answered properly
How long does it take to prepare for Goethe A1?
From zero, most adults need eight to twelve weeks at two lessons a week with homework in between. A1 has a small, well-defined vocabulary and a limited grammar range, so it responds unusually well to focused preparation. Candidates who already speak another Germanic or Romance language often move through it faster still.
Which part of Goethe A1 do candidates fail?
Listening, more often than anything else. Candidates practise reading and writing where they control the pace, then meet audio played twice at natural speed. The speaking module also catches out people who have rehearsed fixed answers and cannot handle a follow-up. Both are fixable with practice at exam conditions.
Is Goethe A1 the certificate German missions accept for a spouse visa?
Goethe-Institut A1 is the most commonly accepted, and some missions accept telc or ÖSD at the same level. The requirement is set by the German mission handling your application, so confirm with them in writing before you book a sitting. See our spouse-visa course for how the requirement usually works in practice.
