Oet preparation for nurses online, taught as clinical communication

OET is an English test about nursing, not a nursing test in English. Candidates who prepare with IELTS materials routinely fail the writing and speaking sub-tests.

Who this is for

Is this the right course for you?

Nurses seeking registration with the NMC, AHPRA, the NCNZ or a Canadian regulator, and health professionals whose employer accepts OET.

What you cover

Inside the OET Nursing course

  • The five OET criteria for speaking and the six for writing
  • Speaking role plays: the clinical scenarios and how they are marked
  • Writing: the referral letter, case selection and what to leave out
  • Listening to consultations and clinical handovers
  • Reading under the sub-test's tight timing
  • Two full timed mock tests with criterion-level feedback

OET is the healthcare-specific English test, with separate versions for twelve professions. This course covers the nursing version.

Why IELTS preparation does not transfer

The reading and listening sub-tests are recognisably English tests. Writing and speaking are not: they are clinical tasks assessed on clinical communication criteria as well as language. Candidates who prepare generally tend to pass two sub-tests and fail two.

The referral letter

Marked on purpose, content selection, conciseness and clarity as well as language. Deciding what to leave out is the skill, and it is where most marks are lost.

OET Nursing questions, answered properly

What OET grade do nurses need?

Most regulators ask for grade B in each sub-test, and some accept a C+ in writing. The NMC, AHPRA and others each set their own rules and they have changed before, so confirm the current requirement with your regulator rather than relying on a general answer. Do this before booking, because the sub-test minimums drive how you should prepare.

How is OET different from IELTS?

Every task is clinical. You write a referral letter from case notes, and you speak in role plays as a nurse with a patient. IELTS is general academic English. Both are accepted by many regulators, but the skills differ enough that IELTS preparation does not transfer well, particularly for writing.

Why do candidates fail the OET writing sub-test?

Case selection, more than language. The referral letter is marked partly on choosing which information the recipient actually needs and leaving the rest out. Candidates who transcribe the case notes faithfully score poorly even with excellent English. It is a clinical judgement skill, and it is teachable.
